Soulseek is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing application, primarily used for the sharing of music. It was created as a platform for underground and independent musicians to share their work with a community of like-minded individuals. Soulseek allows users to search for, download, and upload music files and has become known for its focus on niche and obscure genres. Over the years, Soulseek has faced various challenges, including legal pressure from the music industry, which led to the shut down of some of its servers. Despite these challenges, Soulseek remains popular and continues to be used by a dedicated community of music fans.

Some consider Soulseek a form of cyberpunk because it reflects the ethos and values of the cyberpunk subculture. Cyberpunk is a science fiction genre that is characterized by a focus on advanced technology, rebelliousness, and individualism. Soulseek is a decentralized P2P network that allows users to share music files and connect with like-minded individuals. The network provides a platform for underground and independent musicians to showcase their work and fosters a community of music fans who appreciate niche and obscure genres. This kind of underground community and the use of technology to subvert traditional structures aligns with the values of cyberpunk. In addition, Soulseek has faced legal challenges from the music industry and has had to adapt and evolve over the years to survive. This spirit of defiance and resilience also aligns with the cyberpunk ethos of resistance against oppressive systems and institutions.

Richard Alpert was born in Newton, Massachusetts, on the 6th of April, 1931. He entered Tufts University in 1948 (which I note is the year I was born), graduating with a degree in psychology, then taking a master’s at Wesleyan, and finally earning his doctorate at Stanford. After a year teaching at Stanford he began teaching at Harvard. In 1961 Alpert joined with another Harvard professor, Timothy Leary, in a study of the potential therapeutic possibilities in psychedelics. For various reasons, and with contradictory stories attached to those reasons, both Leary and Alpert, neither of whom had tenure, were fired.

Alpert continued to pursue the study and use of psychedelics, particularly as spiritual agents until 1967. There he traveled to India where he met several spiritual masters. Most important to him was Neem Karoli Baba. The guru gave Alpert the name Ram Das, which means servant of God. In 1971, Be Here Now, was published. It was a book principally written by Ram Das, although probably equally important, layout, design, and illustrations were produced collectively by the residents of the alternative spiritual community, the Lama Foundation. It was wildly successful. It would sell over two million copies.
